Built between 1846 & 1875, I am the largest masonry structure in the Western Hemisphere, yet I was never finished. Though not my primary purpose, I was used as a prison during the Civil War. My most famous prisoner was Dr. Samuel Mudd. I’ve been called the “Guardian of the Gulf” and I’m listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
