My house is not beige.  I am not decorating it so that somebody I sell it to years down the road will be happy - I am decorating it with what I like so that I will be happy while I live in it.  And I like COLOR.  (Having said that, my decorating kind of stalled and the house is a bit of a hodgepodge.   One of these days I may finish..............)

What does all that have to do with scissors?  Well, Fiskars and Westcott have some totally fun scissors to dress up your desk and make your day more fun when you use them.  They're not your normal, boring, solid-colored scissors. 

We're all aware that the standard incandescent light bulb is now part of history.  New regulations have obsoleted it in favor of new technology - brighter, more energy-efficient, longer-lasting bulbs.  There are CFLs, LEDs and halogen bulbs to choose from now.  All three have advantages and disadvantages and each type has uses that it is better for than the others.  And now, instead of being measured in watts, we use lumens.  Watts were a measure of power, whereas lumens are a measure of brightness.

When I was a kid, I didn't like my name and I often thought about changing it.  I had a nickname (as many kids do) and went by that name with family and friends, but not in school.  I sometimes dreamed of being a celebrity and what my new name would be.  Which, if you follow my blogs, you know is leading me to today's topic:

Normally at the beginning of the year I do a lot of blogs about the newest, latest and greatest office products to hit the market and trust me, I will do that this year also.  But today I'm writing about an item that's been around over 10 years already - the 3M Ergonomic Mouse.

If you read my blog on Monday, you know that I was highlighting a crayon sharpener made by Elmer's.  You all know Elmer's (Elmer's Glue).  Well, today's topic is:

Do you remember grade school?  I do.  Well, some of it.  One of the things that I remember is my mom always buying me a new box of crayons every year.  They got used a lot.  And what happens when you use them a lot?  Yuppers..............they get dull and they need to be sharpened.  I usually had the deluxe box - the one with the sharpener built into it.  It was definitely better than one of those little plastic handheld sharpeners, but it was a pain to have to peel the crayon before you put it in the sharpener.

Every company has its own term for customer service.  What you call it isn’t important – what’s important is how your company does it.  Every business has customers. (OK, I heard a collective “Duh” just now.)  I know, that’s stating the obvious.  A business won’t stay in business if it doesn’t have customers, but it’s amazing to me how often companies forget that little fact.

It’s Tuesday afternoon, around 3:00pm.  You receive a phone call from one of your departments.  The employee tells you that the department will be out of a critical component by end of day and they forgot to tell you so that you could order more.  You immediately call your supplier.

My family and I went to visit my parents over the Christmas holiday and we spent some time playing games.  My parents still have some of the board games I used to play as a kid, like Aggravation.  Never heard of that one?  Guess I've got a few years on you..............Oh well.

About a week ago, I wrote about breakroom tables and chairs and promised a post on cabinets and appliances.  In order to make your company breakroom employee-friendly, you need to finish your design with good storage and amenities.

And we're back!  I just knew you couldn't wait for the riveting conclusion to our discussion.  Part 2 deals with images and a touch of color.

Let's start by discussing image resolution.  The optimum resolution for all files is 300 dpi or 600 dpi for line art or text.  Even if your job contains black and white images, they should be saved as grayscale at 300 dpi.  All images should be included at 100% scale (of the print size) and must be submitted in uncompressed TIFF format without layers (flattened). They must all be converted to CMYK colors.  Remember, a higher quality image resolution does not always result in better print quality.  Excessive image resolutions (beyond 300 dpi) will only dramatically increase your file size and, in most cases, will not improve the print quality.  Additionally, it may require extra time to upload larger files.
